1. Finalize Summer Vacation Plans

It’s May, and the peak summer vacation season is typically from late June through early August. So, it’s time to plan your summer getaway yet.

First, here are a few ideas to get your thoughts flowing:

  • Visit a national park
  • Tour Washington DC
  • Go camping
  • Take a beach vacation
  • Reconnect with extended family

Or, for anyone on a tight budget, consider a staycation.

2. Make Mother’s Day Special

Of course, be sure to remember all of your favorite Moms on Mother’s Day.

I don’t know about you, but I owe my mother big time. So many of her values stick with me today.

Here are a few suggestions on how to lavish Mom with your love:

  • Make a homemade breakfast
  • Buy her flowers
  • Spend time together
  • Do some chores at her house
  • Plan a picnic at the park

3. Clean Out The Garage

Choose one area of the house each month and designate it for cleanup. For example, May is my month for goal-setting targeted at the garage.

First, the garage floor gets coated with grimy snow melt and road salt each winter. Furthermore, leaves blow in and never come out. Finally, we have a terrible habit of putting empty boxes and other garbage in this space during the winter.

Thus, I remove everything from the garage each May, toss the garbage, sweep, and power wash the floor.

Okay. Let’s stay outside the house for this next monthly goal idea.

4. Plant Summer Flowers

May is a great month to plant some flowering annuals around the patio and other prominent yard areas.

Some of my favorite flowering annuals include the following:

  • Impatiens
  • Poppy flowers
  • Petunias
  • Yellow marigolds
  • Zinnias

Although I’m in charge of the garage cleanout, my wife is happy to handle the planting duties, which is fine by me. I planted my lifetime quota of flowers during high school and college when I worked on a landscaping crew.

First, ensure you know which flowers need sun versus shade, so you put them where they will thrive.

Second, annuals require much water when the weather warms up and drys out. So go easy on the planting if you aren’t a big fan of watering plants.

5. Organize Clothes For The New Season

The seasons are changing this month. And with these changes come new weather. Thus, take a hard look at your winter clothes.

First, is there anything you didn’t wear? If yes, sell it for cash or give it away. Because if you didn’t touch those clothes this winter, it’s doubtful you will do so next year.

Then, neatly pack away what remains and bring your summer gear to the front of the closet. Take note of your summer stock, then get anything you need for the upcoming season.

Okay. We are making good progress on our monthly goals for May. So, let’s move on to number six on today’s list.

6. Join A Local Group

The spring season is a great time to set goals to join a group, especially for anyone itching to reconnect in the community and form more local relationships.

Summer sports leagues, church groups, and neighborhood associations are good options. Consider the local chamber of commerce or business development committee for the more business-minded people reading today.

Whatever you choose, getting involved is a great way to make new friends and professional connections. Make doing so part of your objectives for the month.

7. Work On Self-Improvement

First, reading goals are a good idea each month, even if it’s just 30 minutes daily. For your May goals, read a book about self-improvement. Thus, save the lighter reading for your summer holidays.

Self-help books are effective at helping you and me learn new life and work skills. They help us see the world in a different light and help us maintain an upbeat attitude.

Second, online courses are another excellent way to better yourself. For example, this MasterClass on developing a winning mindset is an outstanding option. After all, setting and achieving goals starts in your head.

But, most importantly, all of us can benefit from learning that enables us to improve our lives.

Some areas you may seek to improve include the following:

  • Assertiveness
  • Communication
  • Investing
  • Money management
  • Problem-solving
  • Positive mindset
  • Time management

8. Stretch Every Morning

Next, it’s time for some self-care. Furthermore, stretching is one of the best forms of exercise.

Do your stretching right because it calms the mind and lubricates the body. So, make a goal this month to ease into every day with 15 minutes of stretching.

Work on your body’s tight areas. Or choose a different muscle group each day.

You will feel the benefits when pursuing this next May goal.

9. Start A Summer Exercise Program

May’s mild weather creates many opportunities for getting outside to exercise. Walking, jogging, biking, and hiking are all excellent options.

Exercise, the outdoors, and fresh air will lift your spirits and increase your energy during other parts of the day. Work it out during your morning stretch if you encounter any muscle soreness.

10. Have A Memorial Day Barbecue

Last but not least, start the summer off with a barbecue.

Invite some friends and family over. Please keep it simple and make it casual. Relax and have a good time.

Connecting with “your people” is what matters most this month and every month into the future.

Okay. There you have my top 10 goal ideas for May. Next, I have some tips for setting yourself up for success.

How To Set Good May Goals

However, before I wrap up, here are a few words about setting monthly goals.

First, ensure your goals for the month align with the more significant long-term vision I encouraged you to develop during January. Then, prioritize the goals that are most important to you.

Keep in mind that there are only 31 days during May. So, avoid setting yourself up for failure by choosing too many goals.

Second, write your goals down. Doing so builds commitment and helps to clarify your thinking.

Review your goals daily. Add daily tasks to your to-do list that move you closer to your May goals. Then, hold yourself accountable each week by honestly assessing your progress.
